About Management Training for Shipping

Many Managers receive little or no training in Management skills, but instead rely on what they pick up along the way.


With the changing needs of the industry and the inclusion of Management, Leadership and Teamworking skills in STCW, the need to develop the Management skills of sea and shore based staff has never been greater.

PAL specialise in designing tailored training for the industry that develops these key skills. We offer:

We understand the special needs of the shipping industry and have developed a wide range of experiential approaches to working with sea and shore based staff.  The skills development is based on people completing practical tasks and having opportunity to practice the skills as well as gaining knowledge.

What do we provide?

We specialise in designing customised approaches to developing Management Skills, which means we are able to:

  • Deliver training at times and venues that work for your people and the demands of your business
  • Develop training based on programmes or frameworks that you are already using
  • Work in collaboration with your people in the delivery of training

What areas do we cover?

The bespoke approach means that we can develop an approach to meet individual client needs, but there are core areas that clients are often interested in:

 

1. Introduction to Management (3 days)

This 3 day course is designed for people who are new to the Management area and need an introduction to what Management is and the fundamental skills involved:

  • Setting clear objectives
  • Planning and task allocation
  • Monitoring performance
  • Communications skills
  • Introduction to leading a team
  • Introduction to personal style

2. Management Development (3 days)

This 3 day course is designed for people who have Management experience and need to review their performance and enhance their skills: 
  • Management and Leadership
  • Situational Management
  • Managing Conflict
  • Assertiveness skills
  • Effective Performance Conversations
  • Coaching skills for managers

3. Officer Conferences (2 hours to 2 days)

Sessions designed to focus on specific Management skills and to fit within an Officer Conference.  This can be from 2 hours to 2 days and focus on a variety of areas: 
  • Developing effective teamwork
  • Managing tasks
  • Managing people
  • Introduction to Management or Leadership
All of the sessions are based on practical tasks completed in groups so that the ideas and skills can be demonstrated and practiced.  They have proved to be very effective with seafarers who are used to dealing with practical issues whilst onboard.
 
4. Personal Skills Programmes (2 hours to 3 days)
Training designed to develop specific skills that have been identified as important for people’s roles.  These can vary from 2 hours to 3 days and can be tailored to the skill level of the participants:
  • Time Management
  • Introduction planning and projects
  • Communication and Influence skills
  • Performance management and appraisal skills
  • Problem Solving and Decision Making

 

5. Team Development Workshops (tailored courses)

As well as providing skills in Team working and Team Leadership we are also involved in working with individual teams to help them review and develop their own performance.  These can be senior management teams onboard or management teams ashore.  Their performance is vital to the organisation, but it can often be difficult to find a way of encouraging them to honestly assess how well they are working and to explore how they might improve.
 
It is often easier to do this with the help of an independent external person who can be involved in talking to the team members individually and then developing an approach to help them identify how they can enhance their performance.  The use of: structured questionnaires, individual coaching, facilitated reviews etc can often be an effective way to enable the review process.
 
6. Maritime Management Development Programme (MMDP) (5 days)
As well as the tailored approaches described above we can also provide the MMDP, which is a 5 day programme recognised by both the Nautical Institute and IMarEST.  The programme is specifically designed for the needs of the Shipping industry and takes participants through a series of practical tasks that demonstrate how the skills they are gaining can influence their performance. 
The content includes: 
  • Introduction to Management
  • The PACE task management model
  • Objective setting
  • Communication and questioning skills
  • Management of Change
  • Leading a team
  • Myers Briggs Type Indicator
  • Managing stress

MMDP is particularly effective when participants from onboard and ashore can attend together and has been used to great effect to help people who are moving from a sea to a shore based position.
